Disability Rights
Argentina
Inbound, July 2015; Outbound, Feb. 2016 & Oct. 2016
Douglas Jarvis, Advisor at the National Advisory Commission for the Integration of People with Disabilities, partnered with his fellow exchange participant from Argentina, Laura Gonzalez, President of Amputee Without Borders, along with two other participants of other programs, to conduct a webinar on “Best Practices on Disability,” sponsored by the U.S. Embassy, following his exchange. Douglas shared about his experiences in each of the cities he visited in the U.S.—DC, Chicago, and San Francisco, and related what he had learned on disability rights during the program to the context and applicability within Argentina. Furthermore, Douglas conducted a presentation about his program to his then fellow grad students, encouraging them to find exchange opportunities for themselves. Through Douglas’ participation in the program and access to extended networks through fellow participants, Douglas has connected with and learned from other U.S. experts in the disability rights field.
The Disability Rights exchange celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by inviting participants from six countries around the world to learn about the disability rights movement in the U.S. through engagement with prominent activists, leading NGOs, and U.S. government agencies.
